ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY
(ITEC DIPLOMA)

This course is the foundation course for the student who wishes to pursue specialist areas of holistic therapies.
It gives the student all the underpinning theoretical knowledge necessary to embark with confidence on other areas of complementary therapy. (Does not include practical training)
 

Anatomy & Physiology Syllabus

 

Skeletal System
the functions of the skeletal system; the structure of bone tissues; the types of bone; the position of the bones of the skeleton; different types of joints; recognise and give possible causes of postural deformities; the different fractures and their causes
explain and recognise the symptoms, causes and effects of the diseases and disorders of the skeletal system:
Muscular System
the structure and function of the different types of muscle with examples; the structure and function of the various attachments of muscles:; the terms in relation to the muscular system; muscular contraction; the formation of lactic acid; the position and action of specific muscles
the cause and effect of muscular conditions:
The Skin
the position and function of the following parts of the skin:; the functions of the skin;  explain and recognise skin types
skin diseases and disorders and when they are contraindicated to treatment; the different skin cancers and their possible causes
The Cell
the structures of the cell and their function; the process of Mitosis; the process of Meiosis; the term Histology; the structure and function of the main types of tissue in the body; how substances enter and leave the cell
Circulatory & Lymphatic Systems
the structure and function of blood and its components; the position of the main arteries and veins of the body; the structure and function of the various parts of the heart and of the vessels entering and leaving the heart; the pulmonary circulation; the systemic circulation; blood pressure
the conditions of high and low blood pressure; the diseases and disorders of the circulatory system : LYMPHATIC SYSTEM; the structure and functions of the Lymph; the structure and function of the lymphatic system; Lymphatic tissue; the position of the lymph nodes of the body; the interrelationship between the circulatory and lymphatic systems; the diseases and disorders of the lymphatic system

Neurological System
the structure and functions of the following parts of the nervous system: the structure and functions of the Central Nervous System; the effect of stress on the nervous system ; the structure and function of the brain and spinal cord ; how a nerve impulse is created ; the position and function of the spinal and cranial nerves ; the main plexus ,the causes and effects of diseases and disorders of the nervous system Endocrine System
the position of the main Endocrine glands, hormones secreted and the result of hypo and hyper secretion of each ; the effects of hormones on the body ; the interrelationship of the endocrine system with other systems ; the causes and effects of various endocrine diseases and disorders
Respiratory System
the structure of the respiratory system and the function of each organ ; external respiration, i.e. the process and mechanism of breathing ; internal respiration ; the chemical control of the respiration ; nervous control of respiration ; the structure and function of the pulmonary circulation ; the interrelationship of the respiratory system with
other systems of the body ; the causes and effects of diseases and disorders of the respiratory system
Digestive System
the structure and function of the organs and accessory organs of the digestive system ; the function of digestion ; the process by which food stuffs are broken down by the alimentary canal during the digestive process ; the process of absorption of nutrients ; nutrients and enzymes of digestive system; the interrelationship of the digestive system with other systems of the body ; the causes and symptoms of the following diseases and disorders of the Digestive system
Urinary System
the structure and function of the organs of the urinary system ; the process of filtration. ; the composition of urine ; urine production ; the interrelationship of the urinary system with other body systems
Pathology: ; the causes and effects of the disorders and diseases of the Urinary system
Reproductive System
the structure and function of the male and female reproductive systems ; the menstrual cycle ; the structure and function of the breast ; the causes and effects of the diseases and disorders of the Reproductive system

 
Course duration
50 hours incuding classwork, projects and coursework
   
 
Students will also study Client Care and Business Awareness for a further care 50 hours incuding classwork, projects and coursework.
